"The Kid's Wonder Garden is a wonderful project for students for several reasons: Working in the garden gave energetic students a chance to work and learn outside-outside of the classroom and outside in the fresh air. They worked with volunteers, who gave them a connection with the larger community. The program also gave students a chance to work on tangible tasks while learning a worthwhile life skill and extending that experience to helping others in the community. I sincerely appreciate the work and time all of the volunteers give to students and grateful garden consumers."
-Alice Harden, Fifth Grade Teacher at Floyd Elementary
At Floyd Elementary School this season we are planting with Kindergarten students. Jim and Nancy Neal have volunteered to be our garden experts and they are great at making planting and growing easy and fun for the children. Above Jim helps students plant seedlings. In the classroom we are using the curriculum "Growing Healthy Habits" to teach about the water cycle, mulching and other valuable lessons. Thanks to Deanna Swortzel, Mandy Eskew, Alexis Bressler for help in teaching.
It's coming to the end of the summer and the kid's garden is going crazy! So many types of veggies are growing including lettuce, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, and corn. Emily stopped by to pick some tomatoes and pull up some weeds from the garden!
In October 2009 Alison helped fifth graders plant garlic and save seeds. Next it will be time to put the garden to bed.
